We have nicknames for a lot of our regular customers in the shop. This is no secret. Recently we started telling people their nicknames.
It started out as Mom’s way of identifying customers. When we first opened we would talk about who was in and what they bought..etc.. I would ask “which Sarah,” and she would come back with “you know…Fargo Sarah.” She just moved her from Fargo.. There is Doll Clothes Renee, who started knitting doll clothes before making things for real people. Or Wallaby, a customer that bought yarn to make a Wallaby sweater (and it tuned out fabulous). The list goes on.
One of my favorite things to do at the shop is to put new yarn out. I arrange and rearrange. I get great satisfaction in seeing the shelves full and in perfect order. Lately, this is rare. When I come in I straighten, pull forward, flip and fluff. This usually turns into..”who bought this or that.” I have even been known to put yarn back on the shelves that customers have put aside to purchase. At least once a week I rant about needing more yarn and Mom just shakes her head at me.
I know… get to the point. Earlier this week, we received a large shipment of Malabrigo and we were inventorying it and putting it out. As I grabbed an armful, Mom said, “No-that is for Wallaby, she is making another Wallaby.” I made some comments about it being a pretty blue and that I had the perfect spot for it. Anyway, we go on to the next bunch. Then we come to a pretty orange and rust Twist I think it was… and Mom said…”No- that is for Doll Clothes Renee,” who was sitting close by. Then I said, “well she doesn’t want the whole damn bag..” and she replied “yes, I do. Don’t worry I will pay for it.” Of course I am not worried about her paying for it.. I am worried about the holes in shelves! So I start to question what she is going to do with it as if she doesn’t need all of it. So Doll Clothes Renee, starting calling me the Shelf Tyrant! So this has become my Nickname..and I own it.
Now for the good part. All the shelves and walls are full and perfect for the weekend! They are full with new Malabrigo, Dragonfly Fibers, Shalimar, Sweet Georgia, and Claudia Hand Paints. I will be away this weekend. No telling what I will come back to.
