The solution to the mathematical riddle

Did you manage to find the final sum of each fruit in under 10 seconds? Congratulations! Your mathematical skills are truly outstanding. If you didn’t manage to find the final sum, we’ll show you how it was done.

  • First line: one apple + one apple + one apple = 18. So, to find the value of an apple, you had to do the following: 6 + 6 + 6 = 18. So the value of an apple is 6.
  • Second line: one apple + bananas + bananas = 14. To find the value of a banana, replace the apple with its value. This gives: 6 + 4 + 4 = 14. The value of the bananas is therefore 4.
  • Third line: bananas – a pear = 2. Replace the bananas with their value. This gives 4 – 2 = 2. The value of a pear is 2.
  • The fourth line: one pear + one apple + bananas =? We know that the value of a pear is 2, the value of an apple is 6 and the value of bananas is 4. Here, you need to replace each fruit with its respective value to get 2 + 6 + 4 = 12.

However, if you look carefully, you’ll notice a catch. In the previous equations, there were 4 bananas, but here there are only three, so the real answer is: 2 + 6 + 3 = 11. The final result is 11.
